How Stress Affects Our Health

Stress is an undeniable element today. Each person is affected in a  different way. Emotional trauma creates an unstable environment. The mind  often works overtime, with thoughts racing through our heads. Worries and responsibilities compound. How and why does this happen?

The human anatomy  has a “flight or fight” response to danger. It is this physiological  response  that has allowed us to evolve through the ages. When danger threatens us, the physical body responds. During a natural disaster or a political upheaval this ability to respond literally saves lives. The “fight or flight” response is  called  hyperarousal, or alternatively,  the acute stress response.  When danger subsides, there is no longer a need to be on high alert. Modern day stress continue to activate this response.  Mental health clinicians  recommend tai chi , breathwork. and visualization  techniques to combat chronic stress.

There are many medical conditions that can manifest through the stress portal. Diabetes, thyroid imbalance, hypertension, migraine headaches, and digestive disorders are but a few. A medical diagnosis conducted with a doctor will determine results. Your  doctor may also recommend further diagnostic treatments, x-rays, or ultrasound, or provide a referral for appointment with a professional dietitian, psychologist, or physiotherapist.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a fantastic  tool available to combat depression and anxiety.  CBT differs from traditional psychotherapy. The CBT model is based on the idea that thought distortion and maladaptive behavior are a factor in the development of psychological  disorders. This modality focuses on building coping strategies to deal with stress, along with changing unhelpful thought patterns. It is an action based therapy, focused on transforming thought and behavior patterns. CBT has proven effective in the treatment of depression, post traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, and eating disorders.

Talking about our problems is important. Holding feelings in creates tension and disease in the physical body.  Connecting with others may offer strength, courage, and hope. Friends and family may have good intentions when listening to problems. All too often, we are told to “get over it”, “stop feeling sorry for ourselves”, or “forget about it, and move on”.  Our institutions program us further – We are taught and encouraged to do as we are told, be quiet and behave. A qualified therapist may be able to suggest additional strategies and solutions. There is great value in talking to a professional counselor.

Self expression is an part of daily life. Writing, drawing, or painting offer an avenue of self discovery. Learn to play a musical instrument. Make time in a busy schedule to pursue interests and hobbies.  Discover the creative capacity within. Express feelings and emotions in a constructive way.

Cultivate healthy lifestyle choices. Create a wellness plan before stress creates imbalances in the body. An excellent place to start is with a healthy and regular meal plan. Fresh air, exercise, and sunshine are good for you. Take time out  to relax with meditation or yoga. Consider holistic therapies such as Reflexology or Reiki. Make sure to get a good night’s sleep. Avoid the use of tobacco, alcohol and recreational drugs.

The Wisdom And Teachings Of Reiki.

Mikao Usui taught and shared with His students the Reiki Principles. The purpose and meaning of the Principles  is to share the wisdom of Reiki. The Reiki Principles are often referred to as “The Reiki Ideals.” or “The Reiki Precepts”.  Reiki is more than another healing modality.  Reiki is a way of being. The Reiki Principles  build the  foundation of for the Usui System Of Natural Healing.  Although the origins of Reiki are may be traced to Buddhism, Reiki is not a religion. It was Mikao Usui’s clear intention that Reiki was to be shared, taught and practiced internationally,  by people of all different faiths.

 The Reiki Principles

1.Just for today, I will not anger.
Anger is an emotion which must be kept under control. Unleashed, anger harms every aspect of Our affairs. It destroys the body, clouds  judgement, and creates division and turmoil in families, communities and nations. When anger arises, look deeper as to how, why,  when or where this occurs. Record disturbances and stressors. If anger is an issue, keep a small journal close at hand, to monitor your feelings and behaviours. In moderation, anger motivates the soul to a greater purpose, but in excess, anger destroys.  Develop peace from within.

2. Just for today, I will not worry.

Worry wears away life force as water flows over and around a stone. Through time the stone is worn down by the flow of the water. When one issue is resolved, another manifests. In the web of life, brush away the cobweb of trauma with stillness and peace. Mikao Usui  taught His  students to practice meditation daily, chanting the precepts, upon rising, and before retiring.

3.Just for today, I will be grateful for all of My many blessings.

Gratitude is key to to success . We forget to admire the beauty  that surrounds Us – The sun, the moon, the sky, the clouds, and the trees. We forget that life is a miracle and a gift. Every challenge You have  experienced is a soul choice, necessary for  growth and self mastery. When a person reflects back over  a lifetime,  challenges overcome are considered the greatest accomplishment. Focusing on the positive  already present gives the mind focus and clarity of purpose.

4. Just for today, I will do My work with honesty and integrity.

Do the best You can, in every given circumstance. There is always room for improvement. Persistence in all things leads to results. Being and doing Your best  over times builds confidence and success. Every task is worthy of your full attention and concentration. Finding joy in each moment dissolves tension,  frustration and worry.

5. Just for today, I will be kind to all living beings.

All life forms are sacred. Every person, every animal, every plant, every rock,  every element, and every particle of dust and soil.  We are all responsible for the thoughts and feelings we send out. Every action, thought, and feeling has an effect on the planet earth. The practice of kindness and compassion sets an example for others to follow.  Each vibration holds an intention. Each intention builds a thought. Each thought leads to an action. Each action becomes a habit.

The Benefits of Reflexology

Thank you for taking the time to stop by – I always look forward to connecting with readers  on My Blog.  At the Quartz Path, My priority and focus is  holistic wellness.  Today,  there are many different holistic modalities available. My intention is to discuss a variety of these options.
What is Reflexology ? There are 7200 reflex points located on both of the feet. Each individual reflex has a correspondence to an area of the human body.  During a full traditional reflexology session, a light pressure is applied using specific hand, thumb and finger techniques. Three to five pounds of pressure is typically  applied. Reflexology is a versatile and mobile therapy. It may be used on both the very young or the elderly. A full length session usually lasts about an hour.
At The Quartz Path, I am able to offer custom protocols, after reviewing My Client’s health history record. Here is a list of areas where a professional foot reflexology session may benefit.
  • Digestive Problems
  • Allergies
  • Back Discomfort
  • Natural Thyroid Balance
  • Diabetes
  • Premenstrual Tension
  • Menopause

For best results, I recommend a series of six sessions. For the first session, more time may be needed to record and review a Client’s health history.  When a Client has health issues,  emotional trauma or distress  may be a factor for the Client as well. I focus on the full traditional foot reflexology session. All health and personal information given to Me is in the strictest confidence. Each person is totally unique, and responses to a session are individual.  However, Reflexology may stimulate the body’s systems to detoxify.  As a part of My protocol I check in with a Client to document responses to a treatment.  The Client may report  a runny nose, a mild increase in urination, sleepiness, itchiness, or vivid dreams. It is always  fascinating to participate in the healing process.

The benefits of Reflexology include improved circulation and immune system function, detoxification, improved glandular function, and increased stamina and vitality. If an area of the body is diseased, the body will heal in the worst area first, in the order of priority. The body has a brilliant internal control system – the central nervous system. It is sensitive to everything around us. Healing is a process unique in each individual.

Listen to the signals Your body sends You. These signals often provide clues to overall health, and well being. Take action when these messages are sent.   Are You feeling sleepy ?  Take a nap. If You are hungry, make sure observe a proper meal schedule. If You suffer from pain, talk to Your Doctor. Too often people ignore the most obvious indicators, neglecting the need for rest or ignoring regular healthy meals. Plan Your routines to include time for healthy meals. Instead of working extra long hours,  learn to delegate and to take breaks. Spend time on a hobby, or, visit family and friends. Learn to say no to activities when You are overbooked and overwhelmed. Learn to focus on one project at a time, instead of taking on too many responsibilities.
